What is anxiety?
According to Mind, anxiety is what we feel when we are worried, tense, or afraid – particularly about things that are about to happen, or which we think could happen in the future.
Anxiety is a natural human response when we feel that we are under threat. It can be experienced through our thoughts, feelings and physical sensations.
Most people feel anxious at times. It’s common to experience some anxiety while coping with stressful events or changes. This is especially true if they could have a big impact on your life. When these feelings start to intrude on our life, so that we don’t get to do the things we want to, then we realise that it is time to seek help and do something about it.
As you can see from the definition of anxiety above, we can become “time travellers” worried about what we should have done or said and what will or might happen in the future. Mindfulness is the opposite of this and is a practice, which means it is not a “magic wand”, we need to keep practicing it, for it to become effective.
Mindfulness means bringing our awareness into the present moment, on purpose and without judgement. It can be the act of fully immersing ourselves in a crafting activity, or art, walking, or even drinking a cup of tea.
There is a lot of clinical research which shows that mindfulness meditation and mindful practices can reduce stress, anxiety and depression when we adopt it as a regular practice.
You can meditate anywhere and anytime. You don’t need to be on a beach or in a peaceful place and you don’t have to do it for hours. When you first start you will probably find it impossible to meditate for more than a few minutes anyway as your mind will take a little while to get used to the idea that it’s time to relax. You could start with my 3 Minute Breathing Space – a mini meditation you can download. Mindfulness is a “practice” and so it gets easier, and like anything new, you may not be an expert when you start. Keep doing it and you will notice improvements.
