Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a condition that affects the digestive system. Sufferers experience symptoms such as stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. As yet, the exact cause for IBS is unknown. An estimated 20 percent of people in the UK suffer from this condition. There is no complete cure for IBS but there are several studies that have shown that hypnotherapy for IBS can improve the quality of life for sufferers tremendously.
One study in particular, which was performed at the University Hospital of South Manchester in the UK, confirmed that the positive effects of hypnotherapy for IBS are long lasting. Symptoms continued to improve. Patients had better control over their condition. Interestingly, though, the study showed that hypnotherapy for IBS works better in female patients.
A majority of patients in the study showed less severe and less frequent bouts of pain, less bloating and generally less interference of IBS in their everyday life.
How hypnotherapy for IBS works
During gut-directed hypnotherapy, patients learn how the gut works and how they can gain control over their gut function. The therapist also teaches relaxation techniques and helps patients to deal with stress more effectively. Even though stress doesn’t cause IBS it can worsen symptoms dramatically. This means effective stress management is an important part of the process.
Recommendations from IBS organisations as well as medical professionals suggest using hypnotherapy alongside medication and dietary changes to achieve maximum benefits.
What to look out for
When looking for a suitable hypnotherapist to help with IBS, make sure you pick a licensed therapist with training and experience in clinical hypnosis. You also want to make sure your chosen therapist knows the details of successful hypnosis treatment protocols for IBS.
Depending on where in the UK you live, you may be able to access hypnotherapy treatment for IBS on the NHS. But you can always see your chosen hypnotherapist privately.
