We all feel sad now and again. If the feelings of sadness or grief don’t seem to end then we might be facing depression. About 5% of the worldwide population is facing depression at any one time. In the UK, between 8% and 12% of people experience depression in any year (Source: mentalhealth.org)
What are the symptoms of depression?
Depression is generally characterised by a constant feeling of sadness, emptiness or pessimism. Sufferers often experience tiredness with the inability to sleep, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, changes in appetite, loss of interest in activities or hobbies, and many more. In severe cases depression can even lead to suicidal tendencies. It can also lead to physical symptoms such as constant headaches, loss of libido or digestive problems .
How hypnotherapy can help
While traditional Western medicine concentrates on alleviating symptoms with medication and cognitive behavioural therapy, hypnotherapy goes to the root of the problem. It tries to find the trigger event that started the depression. Sometimes this can be more obvious such as the death of a good friend or relative which has resulted in a downward spiral and into depression. At other times it might be a forgotten event during childhood or something that we experience on a more subconscious level. With hypnotherapy treating both, the conscious as well as the subconscious mind, we can go deep and find those root causes and start to deal with them.
Hypnotherapy for Depression is not a quick fix but once resolved will provide a long term solution. Clients are put at ease and learn techniques for effective coping behaviours. Hypnotherapy works on the subconscious where our feelings reside. It can focus on creating a happier mood and reducing the pessimistic outlook and negative thoughts. A new and greater control over the mind gives the patient the sense of freedom they have been lacking.
Hypnotherapy might not be the answer for everyone but it is a safe option to consider. What have you got to lose? There are no adverse side effects. You can learn simple tools that you can use in your every day life.
