2 reasons you can’t lose weight that you might not know about

can't lose weight

You’re doing all the right things. You eat healthy foods, you exercise yet somehow you still don’t seem to be able to shift the weight. Here are some reasons why people can’t lose weight that you might not know about.

Are you getting enough sunlight?

When we’re outside a lot and get a lot of sunshine onto our skin, our body produces vitamin D. Vitamin D helps to improve our health in a wide variety of ways, including our teeth and bone health, immune system and mental health. But did you know that it can also be a contributing factor to maintaining a healthy weight? Here’s why:

  • Vitamin D can potentially prevent fat cell formation
  • It also controls the storage of fat in cells, thus reducing the accumulation of fat in the body
  • Increasing your levels of vitamin D can increase your testosterone levels which is associated with triggering weight loss.

Living in the UK, there are some draw backs when it comes to getting the sunshine you need to create enough vitamin D. There simply isn’t enough sunshine for a large part of the year to get enough vitamin D so watching your diet is more important than ever. Consider increasing your intake of mushrooms and fortified cereals as well as milk, fish and shellfish, all of which are rich in vitamin D. If these types of foods are not an option for you, for whatever reason, you can use supplements to get the necessary vitamin D.

Do you sleep enough?

We all know that lack of sleep causes us to feel grumpy, unmotivated and leads to a lack of focus. But that’s not all. If we don’t sleep enough for an extended period of time, our body starts to malfunction in a variety of ways.

A lack of sleep causes our levels of insulin to increase. Insulin is not only responsible for turning sugar into energy for the body but also acts as the main hormone for fat storage. With insulin levels disrupted, more and more fat gets stored in all the wrong places.

Sleep is also responsible for the production of ghrelin and leptin, two hormones responsible for regulating hunger. Ghrelin signals that it’s time to eat whereas leptin indicates to your brain that you’re full. If you don’t get enough sleep, more ghrelin and less leptin is produced. This causes you to feel hungry more often and feel less satisfied while you’re eating, resulting in more food being consumed overall.

In addition, a lack of sleep makes you crave all the wrong foods. It also makes you less likely to stick to your exercise regimen due to tiredness.
